Meet the Team

Noah Meyer
President
Noah (he/him/his) is a PhD candidate in Physics using time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy to study emergent phases in quantum materials. In his free time, Noah manages a large pickup soccer group at Stanford and enjoys baking bread and gardening. Noah is interested in policies surrounding technology development, energy, environment and much more, and intends to pursue a career in science policy following his PhD.

William Xu
Vice President
William is a fourth-year Materials Science & Engineering Ph.D. student working on using AI to optimize the processing of critical minerals for the clean energy transition. In his free time, William enjoys playing soccer and board games.

Casey Chan
Secretary
Casey (she/her/hers) is a PhD candidate in Chemistry. Casey studies the coevolution of plants and insects using the essential enzyme acetylcholinesterase and plant inhibitors for this enzyme as a case study. She enjoys science communication and science policy, and hopes to connect her interests in chemistry, environmental science, and policy throughout her PhD and beyond! When not working in these spaces, you can find her on the basketball court or reading in a nice sunny spot. She’s looking forward to accomplishing a lot with SSPG!

Carmen Amo Alonso
Engagement/SciComm Officer
Carmen is a postdoctoral Schmidt Science Fellow working on Artificial Intelligence at Stanford. Originally from Spain, she earned her Ph.D. from Caltech and spent a year in the ETH AI Center in Zurich (Switzerland). Carmen is very proud to be part of the academic community and is very committed to education. At SSPG, she serves as the Social Media and Engagement Officer. She firmly believes that, in a democracy, science communication is science policy, and is committed to making scientific topics reachable and accessible for the broader population. She leads education efforts both inside SSPG—through professional development workshops with experts across campus—and outside through our “Science Communication Is Science Policy” outreach program at Spotlight and on social media (follow us on Instagram, LinkedIn, or BlueSky). Carmen believes that an educated society is a more fair and equitable one.

Jack Rao
Financial Officer
Jack is a 3rd year PhD student in BioEngineering. His policy interest focuses on regulations surrounding electricity generation and storage.

Robert Kennedy
Book Club Captain
Robert (he/him) is a fourth-year chemistry Ph.D. Student in the Kanan Lab. His research is focused on CO2 utilization and capture: making catalysts for the reverse water-gas shift reaction (utilization) and activating magnesium-rich silicates to increase their rate of weathering (capture). Outside of research, Robert enjoys reading, watching movies, and playing soccer. Feel free to reach out to Robert if you have suggestions for our book club!
